Application Orientation (Required First Step)

ORIENTATION

Before you can apply, you must attend a Train Your Own Application Orientation via Zoom. This session walks you through the structure, expectations, and commitments of the program. Whether you are a parent preparing for your child or an independent adult training for yourself, this step ensures you know what to expect.

We’ll also discuss the two ways to get started—either working with us to procure a suitable puppy or having your own dog assessed—so you feel confident choosing the starting point that’s right for you.

Please review the entire TYO section of our website and visit the Help Me Decide page beforehand.

Application

APPLICATION

At Orientation we will share a link to the Train Your Own Application. To apply, you’ll complete the Standard Application and submit a medical form from a qualified professional who can verify your disability (or your child’s, if applying as a family). There is a $200 application fee, which is credited toward your program fee if accepted.

➡️ If you already own a dog that you’d like considered for the program, you will also complete the BYOD (Bring Your Own Dog) Application & Assessment.

References & Interview

REFERENCES + INTERVIEW

If your initial application is accepted, we will speak to three disability professionals who know you and your household well. Once completed, the Application Review Committee will review your references and determine if the application should move on to the next step.

You will then be notified via email if you are invited to set up a final interview. This video call is the last step in the application process. We will use the time to get to know you better, to learn more about you and your household, child, and needs, and to answer your questions. This interview will be done over zoom video with our Family Services Team. You will be notified shortly thereafter if you have been accepted into the Good Dog! TYO program.

Pay the Program Fee or Start Fundraising

FUNDING OPTIONS

The total cost of the Certified TYO program is $12,000. Families may:

  • Pay the full amount (fee-for-service), OR

  • Fundraise the full amount with our fundraising coaching, tools and support

Please note: Puppy purchase is not included. You may add this to your fundraising goal if desired.

Puppy Procurement

Good Dog! will guide you in selecting a suitable puppy from a reputable breeder, helping match you with a pup who shows strong service dog potential. However, you are ultimately responsible for selecting, purchasing, and caring for your dog. If you already have a dog, that process begins with the BYOD Application & Assessment.

Participation in the program does not guarantee your dog will qualify as a service dog.
