BASIC OVERVIEW

Good Dog! Service Canines (GD!SC) is hiring an Area Lead for our San Diego Puppy Raising Program.  The Area Lead will be responsible for recruiting, teaching, and managing Puppy Raisers in the San Diego area.  GD!SC Puppy Raisers socialize and teach basic obedience and are responsible for the care and well-being of the puppy from approximately 8 weeks to 12-14 months of age.  The Area Lead will lead classes and meet with Puppy Raisers in-person and will report on the dogs’ progress virtually to GD!SC’s Dog Training Manager. Puppy Raiser class location(s), dates, and times will be determined by the Area Lead.  GD!SC does not have a facility and the Area Lead must be able to house puppies in the event of an emergency or if a puppy must be removed from the raiser and kept until a new placement is found.  

 

GD!SC is developing and expanding our Puppy Raising programs across the country in order to serve more children and families.  The San Diego Puppy Raising program is new and we are looking for an Area Lead who is enthusiastic about our mission and excited to build a program from the ground up.  GD!SC headquarters are located in Fallbrook, CA and the Area Lead may be asked to take part in local events and media opportunities.  The Area Lead must have a flexible attitude, be self-directed, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

 

This position's contact is the Dog Training Manager.  This is a contract position with approximately 6-8 hours of work per month.  Area Leads are classified as Independent Contractors and are compensated per puppy in the program. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities

  1. Recruit and manage Puppy Raisers in the San Diego area.

  2. Supervise the training and well being of each puppy in the San Diego program.

  3. Plan, lead and supervise at least 2 in-person training classes per month (location to be set by Area Lead).

  4. Review and oversee the submission of required training reports and videos. 

  5. Participate in local events and media opportunities as requested.

  6. Ensure all required volunteer puppy raiser paperwork is distributed and collected prior to the start of puppy raising.

  7. Ensure puppy raisers receive all necessary communication and have appropriate technology accounts set up.

  8. Assist in obtaining required media (photos & videos) for fundraising/marketing newsletters. 

  9. Monitor all social media posts specific to the dogs in training raised by Puppy Raisers.

  10. Responsible for care of the dog in case of emergency or if dog must be removed from raiser and kept until a new placement is found.

  11. Help with puppy transport and matriculation transport as requested.

  12. Collaborate with other Area Leads and contribute to development of Puppy Raiser resources used organization-wide.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Skills and Qualifications

  • Must have successful completion of Apprentice Trainer program at Good Dog! Service Canines or have a minimum of 2 years experience running a service dog puppy raiser program.

  • A degree from Bergin University of Canine Studies or professional dog training experience.

  • A commitment to our mission and alignment with our core values.

  • Must have experience training puppies with relationship-based, positive dog training techniques and knowledge of best practices in canine behavior, care and safety.

  • Ability to teach dog training techniques in both 1:1 and group settings.

  • Strong coaching and motivational skills.

  • Ability to identify training needs and challenges and provide feedback and support to Raisers.

  • Ability to hold in-person training classes at least 2x/month in the San Diego area.

  • Strong communication skills both in-person and virtually.

  • Must be able to house dog(s) temporarily if an emergency arises or if dog must be removed from raiser and kept until a new placement is found.

  • Self-directed and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • A flexible attitude and drive to innovate and build the local program.

  • Must live in the San Diego area.

  • Respects and maintains privileged confidential information.

 

Essential Requirements

  • Physically capable of handling dogs up to 80 pounds, have the agility to move quickly, climb stairs, and the ability to get up and down easily while working and playing with the dogs. Must be able to operate office equipment, computers, and video recording devices with ease.

  • Must have access to the internet, a smartphone, and computer with video capabilities.
